5B has been extremely busy starting off the New Year! We are in the midst of a few new, exciting projects, and are working hard before we meet with you again in March for our 2nd set of conferences!
In Reader’s Workshop, students have finished their Mystery Book Club novels today, and we are about to create a an iMovie trailer using iPads which I have borrowed for this project. The overall consensus on the Book Club novels has been very positive and the students are quite excited to create their own movie trailer based on their book. Students will be creating/selecting still shots and short clips of themselves and incorporating them into their trailer. Many students will also be incorporating role play into their trailer and will most likely be digging through your tickle trunks for items to use in their scenes. We look forward to sharing these with you during Student led conferences!
In Writer’s Workshop, we completed Descriptive Reports before Christmas, and are just finishing up an independent Recount. Next, we will be learning how to write an Explanatory Report which explains how something came to be (cause and effect). This report will be presented either as a slideshow, pamphlet, written report or poster. The information will be based on the question we have been exploring in Social Studies: Does the environment influence the development of ancient societies? Based on our work in Social Studies, students will also be asked to create a triptych (a 3 panelled project) that demonstrates the environment (before, during, and after) of the ancient society, Nubia. These projects will be presented in the multipurpose room to Grade 4 and 6 and family members are encouraged to attend as well. I will let you know when we select a date and time. In the meantime, students will be asked to bring in any materials they have at home to contribute to this project. In the past, we have used clay, paint, miniature toy trees/animals/, rocks, sand, pipe cleaner, etc. The Grade 5 teachers are in the process of gathering the basic materials and students are able to contribute more if they wish. One thing we have asked students to organize as soon as possible are the 3 panels. They should be the same size (about the size of a cereal box), and sturdy enough to hold the above materials.
In Math, we have moved on from Fractions & Decimals and we are now working on Unit 1 – Patterns & Equations. Currently, we are learning about variables and equations, as well as how to solve equations using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
As most of you know, I am expecting and I am due in early June. I will try my very best to make sure everything is taken care of before I leave and that the transition is as smooth as possible for the last few weeks. 🙂
