October 3 – 7

Hi Everyone,

It’s hard to believe we have been back to school for one whole month.  The weeks are flying by and we’ve been doing great things in 5B!  Here are some things we are working on this week:

Math – We are continuing with Estimation.  Please look for two homework sheets this evening, due Thursday: Front-end rounding & Compatible numbers.  Students should be comfortable using both methods, mostly independently.

Reading – We have begun our Guided Reading Groups and I will be doing individual reading assessments starting next week.  Students should continue to read at least 20 minutes each evening.

Writing – We have begun conferencing, noticing what our individual strengths and challenges are.  Using our field trip as a past personal experience, we will be writing another Recount in the coming weeks.

Social Studies – Today, we welcomed Mr. Gillis (Kaden’s dad) into 5B to learn about Inuit culture, past and present.  It was a very informative presentation and the students were very interested!  We look forward to listening to Jason MacNeill tomorrow, who we met at Orwell Corner, as he will be bringing in some of his own artifacts to share with our class. I hope your child enjoyed the interview they completed recently.  A big thanks to all the individuals who agreed to meet with your child!  We will be using all of this information to help us create a Google Slideshow, demonstrating what we have learned about the past.

Word Work – We have begun Word Work this week and will work together as one group, recalling how to sort, check and reflect on our assigned words.  I will also take this time to review and practice the homework activities so the students understand what is expected of them for the coming weeks.  Please expect a blue Word Work scribbler with the homework activities sheet pasted on the inside, as well as a ziploc baggie with their own personal words within it.  It is important the students bring these words back to school with them each day.

Other:

School Pictures went out today.  The due date for orders is Wednesday, October 19th

Scholastic Book Order forms went out today, as well.  The due date is also Wednesday, October 19th

5B will be welcoming a student teacher from UPEI this week.  Mr. O’Hanley will be joining us from mid-October to mid-December.  The students will have a chance to meet him on Thursday and Friday as he will be in for orientation.  I look forward to learning new practices and having another enthusiastic educator in the room!

Have a great week! 🙂

P.S.  Here’s a little quote found in Fish In A Tree

Image result for Everyone is smart in different ways. But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life thinking that it's stupid
